Raleigh NC| Apex Sports Center Rebounds Nicely

Dream Sports Center’s company character shows resilience

Kudos to the men behind the recent resurgence of Apex’s Dream Sports Center. Just eight months ago, the recreation center faced a crisis that might have crippled most family-oriented businesses; instead, they appear poised to expand.

Amanda Hoyle of the Triangle Business Journal has reported how new leadership brought the sports complex back from possible failure after Raleigh police arrested co-founder Richard Ahmed for alleged crimes pertaining to sexual offenses with a child. (According to the article, Ahmed is awaiting trial after a grand jury indicted him on charges.)

When Ahmed relinquished his share of ownership of the center, an opportunity arose for investor Steve Werner, who had plans for a separate sports facility in Holly Springs; he reached a deal with remaining Dream Sports partner Bob Boucher.

Last month, the investors’ partnership secured a chunk of capital — a $2.75 million loan, to be precise. Now, Werner is hoping to double the center’s average annual revenue of $1 million within 18 months.

Judging from the article, it appears that the Dream Sports brand and reputation didn’t take any serious long-term hit. The people involved clearly made that happen on strength of character and commitment to providing a safe, enjoyable outlet for kids and adults alike; as Werner puts it in the article, recreation league participation has not declined. Given the nature of Ahmed’s alleged infractions, it’s an impressive feat, if not commendable. Boucher, Werner and the rest of Dream Sports management might want to run with this and make it a selling point for families seeking area activities.
