Raleigh NC| This Just In – Online News Beating the Newspapers

This just in — people find their news online

Internet Surpasses Newspaper as News SourceWhile it may just be stating the obvious, The Pew Research Center recently released a study showing that 40% of Americans use the internet as their main source for national and internation news.  That’s up 16% percent from just last year!  While television still reigns supreme overall at 70%, it too is being challenged by 59% of those ages 18 – 29 who claim the Internet is their main source of news.

If you are a newspaper or televison executive and are not concerned with this study then you need a lesson in disruptive technologies.  Both the newspaper industry and the television industry will be forced to reinvent themselves within the next decade or face the same fate as the music industry.  The television industry has it easier as they are already obviously very familar with video and production techniques.  The newspaper has a much more difficult task ahead to remain relevant in a fast paced world.  Newspapers like The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times will survive in some form simply based on their reputation and readership.  Community newspapers have shown resolve, but smaller metro papers will struggle.

Both newspapers and televisions will struggle in the next decade with providing traditional and online users interactive news and content.  In Raleigh, NBC-17 has done an excellent job of moving online.  Their MyNC sites and 30Threads are great examples of the interactive content that other companies should follow.

Does your company need a PR firm that understands how to get the word out, both traditionally and online?  MMI Associates is a full-service public relations firm located in Raleigh, NC.  Please visit the MMI Associates Website for more information.
