Politics and PR| Vote For ________

With New T-shirts You Decide for What or Who to Campaign

Gap, Inc. has officially joined the mania surrounding the upcoming presidential election by putting its own twist on an age-old campaign slogan.  The retailer recently launched the creative “Vote For _____” campaign in an attempt to refocus their marketing efforts on their core customers while encouraging the younger generation of Americans to vote in November.

Gap is selling “Vote For _____” T-shirts for $15 and store windows will display images of real people who filled in their blanks at Gap events this past summer.  The shirts may be plain white, and incomplete, but the idea behind the campaign is to give Americans a voice in the election process by giving them the opportunity to express which issues are most important in their presidential candidate decision.

Gap’s core customers, traditionally ranging from ages 25 to 35, are being targeted through an imaginative marketing campaign that encourages this younger generation to express the issues they feel most passionate about.  Select stores are offering the same slogan in the form of a button and Gap is already utilizing a social networking giant by making the buttons available to pass around on Facebook.  Their efforts to reach younger generations are enormous and with the added publicity from famous figures posted on the campaign Web site, Gap is sure to influence the voting trends among young people, not to mention a little more revenue in response to T-shirt sales.

The energy that surrounds this year’s decision is at its highest and what better way to reach out to your customers than getting them involved in the spirit of the election?  Other campaigns encouraging young people to vote have been launched by similar retailers but Gap is the only brand promoting self-expression and a creative alternative to traditional slogans.  So “Vote For Peace”, “Vote For Clean Air,” or even “Vote For A Three-day Weekend.”  Whatever it be, Gap has my vote for a successful marketing campaign.
