Peter Shankman’s Help A Reporter Out Wins Open Web Award

Help A Reporter Out, or HARO,  was started by Peter Shankman (one of our favorite people on Twitter) and recently won the People’s Choice Social News Open Web Award (say that three times fast).  HARO is an emailing service for both reporters and for us public relations types.  Shankman sends out a HARO email, no more than three times per day, with requests for stories and interviews from reporters.  Public relations professionals who sign up for the emails can then contact the reporters directly with pertinent information.  The service is free, and the only rule is that if you do contact a reporter, it better be with a legitimate source (not just to get your client in front of a reporter).  Shankman backs this rule up by calling out those who spam reporters and telling the entire list of reporters to block the offender from their email.

We are big fans of HARO and of Shankman (who I got to see speak in Raleigh about a month ago).  So if you are a reporter in search of a good interview or a public relations professional trying to get your client into some larger publications, sign up for HARO.  To see the rest of the Open Web Award winners, visit Mashable.com.
